A cost-analysis study of using adult red cell packs and Pedi-Packs in newborn intensive care units in Southern Iran

Abstract Background and objective Saving blood products is an important public health issue especially in developing countries with limited financial resources. We aimed to suggest a new hypothetical model make change the current transfusion policy newborn intensive care unit (NICU) reduce wastage of supplies as well risk exposure multiple donors. Methods In this cross-sectional study, all transfused neonates (n = 70) who were admitted NICU Nemazee Hospital, tertiary referral hospital Southern Iran, evaluated between March June 2019. Based on information neonates’ during study period determined indices, specific pediatric pack was suggested related total costs per transfusion, donor-exposure rate method, compared. Results Considering mean number transfusions neonate: 4 volume packed red cells: 20 ml cost-analysis adult presented. Arithmetically, we proved higher cost for using comparing pack. Additionally, set leads 24% reduction RBCs 68.13% rate. Conclusions The assignment dedicated will be able improve cost-effectiveness by substantial wastage. This finding should taken into consideration generate economic growth improvements child status.
